I was able to go to the LotR exhibition at the Indiana State Museum last week, and here's what I had to say about it.
(err...I did get rather..over-excited about severl costumes and items, sorry)
The LotR Exhibit was insane. But in the best way.
They wouldn't let you take pictures or notes, or else you'd be arrested.
But I took a camera and a notebook anyway, I just didn't use them inside the exhibit. >.>
I can't remember exactly what happened in order, but I'll do my best.
Let's see, we first saw Treebeard. Not *the* Treebeard, just a bust of Treebeard made for the exhibit only. Then we saw a 2 foot tall maquette of Treebeard, which was cool.
Then we saw Dead!Boromir, which didn't look like Sean Bean at ALL. And yet some people on the set were all "Oh! Sean Bean should have something to drink!" when they saw the dead Boromir sitting up on a chair. I mean, I don't know how anyone could be fooled by that. >.>
Then we saw Gil-Galad's spear, which was really cool. And then his shield, which was awesome.
We saw Kiran Shah's Frodo costume, and the Light of Earendil, which was awesome. Then there was this little TV where you could watch Elijah Wood talking and stuff, but there were Elijah fangirls watching one of the clips ahead of us, so I had to wait for them. Lij didn't say anything besides the mandatory "Frodo realized Sam was only there to help", but then there was a small clip where Frodo reaches to Sam with his bloody hand, and they're all "OMG THERE'S BLOOD ON ELIJAH'S FAIR HAND." and I was just like "No dip, Sherlocks, seen the movies?" -_____-
Then we saw Elrond's stuff, but the stuff wasn't as....nice as it looked in the movie. Like...Varya and his headpiece were kinda unimpressive, but they had this BEAUTIFUL Elven telescope. I mean, there are no words to describe it. I am so going to take it from them, for we wants it, precioussss. x.x
Then we saw Aragorn's costume. The actual costume, the one Viggo wore, washed, and mended. And we were standing less that 2 inches away from it. Heh. And they had several videos about how cool Viggo was.
And they had the shards of Narsil, then the re-created Anduril. They were so awesome.
And they had Kind Theoden's outfit! And his stuff. It was so interesting. I loved the horns they showed, and the royals seals they showed.
Then we saw a huge statue of Lurtz (which was, again, just made for the exhibit, sadly), and then they had videos talking about how it took 10 hours to put on the make-up, and Lawrence Makaore was snoring, and everyone watching the video was like *ggl*, cos he's SUCH a loud snorer. Then they had Sean Astin's Hobbit ears (or, well, a pair of them), then a TON of Orc/Uruk feet in a case.
And they had IAN MCKELLEN'S sotume for GANDALF THE GREY. Eee. It was so unbelievably AWESOME. ;D ;D ;D And his staff ROCKED. They also had the papers that he looked through in Gondor (FotR), and the calligraphy was incredible! <3
Then they had this thing where you and two other people could sit on reconstructed pieces of Gandalf's cart, and the people on the left would be small, and the person on the right would be huge. I didn't do that, though, because I'd done several things like that before, and I was only there with one other person, so I would've had to pair up with a total stranger, and I don't really like doing that. x.X
Then they had Galadriel's costume, which was, surprising, beautiful. I really liked that. (They had her brooch, headband, and ring, then Celeborn's things as well. All fantastic.)
And then...they had something where you could scan your face....but I didn't do that either.
And they had SARUMAN'S COSTUME. ;D ;D ;DIt was...unbelieveable that I was able to stand so close to it. Then they had EVERYTHING in his store-room. It was insane, but sadly they didn't explain what was in every jar, so I'm puzzled about a few things.
And then, in this really special room, they had the ONE RING suspended in...liquid plastic, or something, with the LotR characters saying quotes from it. It was awesome. Really, very much so. I stood there for several moments, just...looking at it. >.>
When you came out of THAT room, you immediately saw...a Nazgul! Ohhh man, that was so awesome! It was so intricate, so....pretty, almost. And they had the main horse's headplate, too, as well as the 9 kings (and also the Nazgul's) crowns and rings. All quite interesting.
After that....you saw the small-scale Isengard (which was actually around 6 feet tall), and some clips of the stunt actors for Ian & Christopher doing stuff (how I would LOVE to be a stunt actress!). The Isengard was doing very well, you could actually see some things inside of it!
And then....oh, yes, you saw the Sauron costume and the small-scale Barad-Dur (which was around 8 feet tall). That was incredible too. It was mildly intimidating to be looking up into the face of Sauron. o.O
Then, you saw Gimli's costume! Well, technically, his scale-double's costume. Sooo cool! I could easily see how that would've weighed a TON.
Right next to that was Legolas's costume, and....XD! His pants were SO dumb. I loved his green over-shirt, but those pants....XD. I don't know how Orlando could walk around in that with a straight face, but then...he's an actor. (no....I'm not a real fan of Orlando..)
They had a random Elven soldier's costume somewhere, but I don't remember where.
They also had Arwen's costumes (her riding outfit and a blue dress), and let me tell you, they are SO UGLY in person. They looked, y'know, half-way decent on film, but MAN, they were AWFUL. Even Mom thought so, which is saying a ton. (For the record....yes, I dislike Liv Tyler's Arwen, but I do like the book!Arwen)
They also had a TON of swords. I was SO jealous. My smaller sword wasn't as impressive as all the ones they showed.
They didn't have: Any of the Hobbit costumes (save Kiran Shah's), Eowyn's, Faramir's, Eomer's, Boromir's, Gandalf the White's, Elrond's, or Celeborn's. Which was terribly disappointing. Though, to their credit, they had something like Faramir's and something like Eomer's, but that comes in a moment.
And then....oh, yes, I went to see the One Ring one last time....(whaaaaaat? It was.....shiny. >.>), then we moved on.
There was this guy talking about the armor and chainmail, and he was kinda cool, but he took forever to say what he wanted to say.
Then there was this HUGE row of different armor styles. The Uruk-Hai's, the Orc's, the Moria Goblin's, three different Rohirric ones (including something like Eomer's), three different Gondorian costumes (including something like Faramir's), the Haradrim's costume (which looked disturbingly more Middle-Eastern in person than they actually did in the film, I hope no one was was offended when they saw that. x.X).
Then...it ended, except for some artwork by Alan Lee, John Howe, and several other artists. I was quite impressed, I must say.
Then we left, and it was over, and I took a picture of the banner but I don't have it right now. When I get it uploaded, I'll post it.
